Demon Turf is a 2D/3D hybrid platformer from Fabraz, developers of niche indie title Slime-san. As the ambitious upstart Beebz, you’ll have to conquer a wide assortment of demonic kingdoms to become the new queen of Hell. Much like their spunky, shape-shifting protagonist, Fabraz are clearly incredibly ambitious, because Demon Turf is trying to achieve a hell of a lot.

Ripped apart, the demon world is in a state of segregation. Gangs have claimed areas and are battling for complete control whilst the Demon King oversees the chaos. Sick and tired of the whiny hellspawn, our resident badass, Beebz, takes it upon herself to reunite the land. With a treacherous trip ahead of her, you join the rebellious protagonist as she attempts to kick the crap out of turf leaders to be crowned the Demon Queen.

The lurid and vibrant setting is a mix of retro low-poly aesthetics that evoke memories of early 3D games, with chunky pixelated texture and sharp, thick-lined 2D cartoon characters. The clashing of styles makes an impression, and it works well due to the expressiveness of the characters, and how the strong neon colors unify everything together.

If you’re a veteran of the 3D platformer, you’ll instantly be at home. You’ve got your hub worlds from which you’ll strike out into different levels, hoovering up collectibles and navigating hazards along the way. Beebz (and every other character) is a 2D sprite navigating a 3D world. She has an assortment of moves available, but for the most part the game keeps it fairly simple, stripping it back to basics. If you think about the terrifying, existential crisis-inducing levels in Super Mario Sunshine where the FLUDD gets ripped off and Mario is left to fend for himself, that’s basically what yopu’ve got here.

The visuals in Demon Turf are a mixed bag. While some may not like the idea of mixing 2D and 3D sprites, personally, I thought that the contrasting combination worked well… most of the time. Particular areas highlighted the juxtaposition wonderfully with bright backdrops that complimented the hellish protagonist. Unfortunately, most environments are quite dreary with a murky smog that is reminiscent of Nintendo 64 era titles. The angst soundtrack perfectly captures Beebz’s personality. Her rebellious nature is evident in the childish vocal lines and contemporary melodies that accompany the range of stages.

Demon Turf is the kind of game that wears its flaws on its sleeve, but everything in it comes together, and works that it becomes hard to not get sucked into the gameplay. Platforming and making progress is engrossing when the gameplay facilitates a rhythm to the level design and gaps; and this title revels in it.

Demon Turf‘s ambition to be this massive, quirky 3D platforming revival is essentially its downfall. There’s some really good stuff at the game’s core, but they’ve padded it out with so much extra unnecessary crap. What could have been a supremely tight 5-6 hour experience spirals out into this messy mandela of optional objectives, collectibles and level repeats that I just have no desire to spend any more time with. I’ve mostly enjoyed the time I’ve already spent on it, despite all the rough edges, and I really applaud Fabraz‘s creative ambition.
