A top Federal Trade Commission official is criticizing Facebook’s move to shut down the private accounts of two academic researchers and end an investigation into misinformation spread through political ads on the social network.
Facebook misused its 2019 data privacy agreement with the slotxo FTC to justify the closure of accounts by New York University researchers this week, Samuel Levine, acting director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection,
said in a letter to Mark. Facebook CEO Zuckerberg Thursday Levine also said Facebook failed to live up to its previous promises to notify the FTC in advance of doing so.
Facebook has confirmed that researchers violated its terms of service and engaged in unauthorized collection of data from the larger network. However, academics said the company was trying to curb negative research.
NYU researchers with the Ad Observatory Project have been looking for Facebook’s Ad Library for years, which are searchable on ads that run across Facebook products.
