Typically, weather data is collected from a network of weather stations that are strategically placed throughout a region. These weather stations measure various weather parameters such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. This data is then used to create weather forecasts and climate models that take into account the specific geography and topography of a region, which can give rise to microclimates.

In some cases, snow day predictor specialized sensors may be used to capture more detailed weather information in a specific location, such as within a city or urban area where the weather can be significantly different from surrounding rural areas due to factors such as the urban heat island effect.
