PCC Community Markets, the Seattle-based community-owned market for food with 15 locations, announced on Tuesday that it has discontinued the sale of plastic bottled water sized below one gallon.

This retailer’s decision expands on its ban on single-serve plastic water containers that are less than 500ml. This will mean that approximately 100,000 single-use plastic bottles will no longer be available in PCC stores throughout the Puget Sound.

The company stated that the co-op’s current ban on plastic water containers was widened in its ongoing efforts to reduce petroleum-based plastics. This latest initiative is by PCC.

* Working to eliminate all petroleum-based plastics from deli packaging by 2022; in 2019 PCC switched round deli containers made of petroleum-based plastics to plant-based compostable, eliminating more than 8 million pieces of petroleum-based plastic each year;

“PCC’s determination to eliminate petroleum-based plastics is an absolute priority,” said Brenna Davis, PCC’s vice president of environmental and social responsibility. The cooperative must tackle the problem of plastics’ relationship to water and soil pollution, chemical exposure to humans and climate changes. PCC is dedicated to providing sustainable alternatives for our customers and supporting the environment.

Sparkling water and drinks with high PH are exempt from the ban.

PCC as per the new water bottle ban and is working to provide consumers more sustainable choices. This is akin to water sold in refillable or reusable aluminum bottles. These bottles are stronger than cans that are single-use and are reusable. If they are damaged, they can be reused quickly. Similar to glass, these aluminum bottles are infinitely recyclable.

Additional ways that PCC offers alternative solutions for water include bulk water dispensing;

Boxed water is 92% plant-based recycled within the Puget Sound region, and constructed out of Forest Stewardship Council, (FSC-certified) paper; water stored in glass bottles which can be reused and reused.

This updated ban is in line with the PCC’s sustainability goals for five years, which also include increasing organic product selection and carbon-negative operations in stores.

Coborn’s Midwestern Grocer will be moving to Associated Wholesale Grocers as its primary wholesaler starting next year.

Plans include AWG to begin delivering groceries to St. Cloud, Minn.-based Coborn’s in January, according to the companies. Coborn’s will be serviced by AWG’s new Upper Midwest Division in St. Cloud located within the former Creative Memories warehouse facility in the city’s I-94 Business Park. AWG’s Nebraska Division as well as the Great Lakes Division are able to temporarily transport fresh and frozen goods.
