    The Chinese company bought a factory in Newport to produce microchips.Newport Wafer Fab is an electronics company that manufactures semiconductors and employs 450 people at its plant in Tredegar Park.

    It was bought by slotxo Nexperia – which already has a site in Manchester.Dr. Drew Nelson, outgoing chairman of Newport Wafer Fab, said the agreement was a “key part” of the South Wales industry.

    It now manufactures silicon semiconductors and is evolving into compound semiconductors that are smaller and transmit more information faster than silicon.

    The site is a member of a group of Welsh organizations CSconnected, including the universities of Cardiff and Swansea, which wants to become Wales as a world technology leader.

    In 2017, 10 councils, made up of the Cardiff capital area, announced £ 38 million for a Newport plant or foundry for the production of compound semiconductors used in robotics, 5G and unmanned cars.
